Lost Rembrandt painting rediscovered after 65 years

A Rembrandt painting valued at millions rediscovered after 65 years. Ten hours ago. Ian Youngs, culture reporter. Kelly Schenk vom Rijksmuseum. A long-lost Rembrandt painting has been rediscovered and verified as authentic by experts, following decades of unknown whereabouts. The 1633 work *Vision of Zacharias in the Temple* was removed from the Dutch master’s catalog in 1960 and vanished after its sale to a private collector the next year. It reemerged when the owners brought it to Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum for testing, prompting a two-year analysis. “When I saw it in our studio after restoration, I was immediately struck by its incredible power,” said Rijksmuseum director Taco Dibbits. Kelly Schenk, Rijksmuseum. Dibbits said the Rijksmuseum gets lots of emails from people seeking info on paintings they’ve inherited or purchased. In this instance, they recognized it could be something extraordinary. “It arrived via email, and one of our curators thought, ‘This is truly a fascinating image—we’ve known about the painting for over 133 years, but we’ve never seen it.'” The museum verified its authenticity after analyzing the paints, which matched those used by Rembrandt in that era, as well as the painting technique and layer buildup, which align with his other early works. ‘Dedicated his soul to it’.
